Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in planning and presenting a Continuing Education (CE) activity at Washington University School of Medicine. Washington University School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. Washington University School of Medicine endorses and strives to comply with the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education and associated federal regulations (such as the Sunshine Act/Open Payments) as they relate to the delivery of CE.

It is expected that this application be completed by or with the Chair or Planner due to the complexity and nature of the information being requested. Additionally, before you begin this online application, it would be very helpful to already have the following information available:

Planning Team Members *

List all persons involved in the activity: planning the design, content and/or speaker selection. A representative from each profession included in the target audience must be included on the planning committee, regardless of whether credit for that profession will be provided. Please note that an individual with a primary WU faculty appointment (i.e., WU employee) must be assigned on the "Planning Team" page of the application as the Chair, Co-Chair or Planning Committee Member.

Logistics

Dates, times and location of the activity. Planning services and credit types being requested. CME accredits single live activities (in person, webinar, or hybrid), series, enduring materials, and RSS (rounds). We are jointly accredited to provide AMA for physicians, ANCC for nurses, ACPE for pharmacists, and COPE for optometrists. Not all credit types are available for all activities. There will be fees associated based on program specifics.

Practice Gap information

The CE planning process begins with identifying what the problem is in the quality of patient care or professional development that this educational activity is attempting to address. Identify the current practice (what is), the best practice (what it should be) and the resulting gap (practice-based problem to be addressed by this activity).

Needs Assessment with supporting data and Educational Design/Format

This section identifies why the practice gap exists and what sources were used to identify that gap. Indicate the type(s) of healthcare provider(s), whether the audience is internal or external to WU, and specialties this activity is targeting. Specify who will select the topics and the criteria for the selection of the presenters.

Learning Objectives

List the learning objectives of this activity. List the educational strategies that will be used to address the practice gaps and fulfill the objectives. Additionally, if you will be using any non-educational strategies to enhance or facilitate change, please indicate those.

Core Competencies and Physician Attributes

Choose from the core competencies from the ABMS, ACGME, IOM and IPEC that this activity will address.

Potential Barriers

As a planner for this CE activity, you are expected to anticipate potential barriers your participants may encounter when attempting to implement the types of performance changes you have identified. Indicate individual barriers, barriers in the system, and patient-related barriers. Discuss how this activity will address any of these barriers. Indicate any other initiatives within the institution or other groups that could be included to enhance the content of this activity and/or help address or remove any of the identified barriers.

Evaluation Outcomes

Identify the methods to be used to measure the changes of the learners' competence, performance, or patient/community health care outcomes.

Administration

Provide the WU department/division involved with presenting this activity. (It is required that a WU member be involved in all activities accredited by our department) Indicate the funding sources for the activity and if any ineligible companies (formerly commercial interests) will be displaying or providing educational grants. If applicable, identify any non-WU organizations involved in the planning of this activity.

Tentative Agenda

Upload a Word doc or PDF of the tentative agenda. (Not applicable for RSS/Rounds.)

Apply for Credit

* Note, an individual who has ownership interest (equity) in or is employed by an ineligible company has a legal duty to act in the company's best interests, which is considered an unmitigable conflict; thus these individuals are prohibited from being involved in the planning or presentation of a CE activity. This rule includes those whose ownership interest is in the form of stock and/or stock options in a non-publicly traded company who have not yet received any payment. There are three exceptions in which such an individual can have a limited role:

  • when activity content is not related to the business lines or products of their employer/company,
  • when activity content is limited to basic science research, and they do not make care recommendations, or
  • when participating as technicians to teach safe and proper use of medical devices and do not recommend whether or when a device is used.
