FAQ: ABS Credit Reporting

Q. How will my WU CME credits be reported to the American Board of Surgery (ABS) now that they changed their reporting policies?

A. As of July 1, 2023, ABS discontinued self-reporting of CME credits directly to the ABS website by diplomates. Beginning with sessions dated 7/1/2023, WU CME will report CME data to our accrediting body (ACCME), which will submit credits to ABS for the following WU conferences/rounds:
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident Conference-BCT01 – Monday 7:00 am
  • Breast Tumor Conference - BGS01 – Thursday 4:00 pm
  • General Surgery Conference-BGS03 – Wednesday 7:00 am
  • Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference- BGS04 – Second and Third Wednesday 7:00 am
  • Multidisciplinary Pancreas Imaging Conference- BON07 – Monday 7:00 am
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Hand Conference - BPS02 – Monday 5:00 pm
  • Trauma Performance Improvement/Operational Process Meeting - BTM01 Fourth Thursday 7:00 am
  • Pediatric Surgery Conference- CPD29 – Monday and Wednesday 7:00 am
  • Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Conference VA St. Louis Health Care System- VIM04 – 2nd and 4th Monday

Q. Will the other conferences/rounds not being reported to ABS still be CME accredited?

A. Yes, all currently accredited conferences/rounds will continue to be CME accredited.

Q. Can I send CME credits I have obtained from national meetings or other non-WU organizations to the WU CME office and have you submit them to the ABS?

A. No. credits obtained from other institutions, at society meetings, or online will need to be reported by the credit providers of those activities.
A. If you are a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), you will still be able to upload your credit on their website and have it reported to the ABS.

Q. How do I make sure my WU credit will be reported to the ABS?

A. In order to begin reporting your WU CME credit, you will need to log into the CME website using your WUSTL Key. You will be prompted to provide your membership board, date of birth, ASB ID, and give permission for the CME office to report your credit. You must mark “Yes” to give this permission; if you do not, the CME office is unable to report any of your credits. If you do not receive the prompt, the CME office may already have your information which can be reviewed and edited under the My Account tab – EDIT LICENSING/BOARD/MOC INFO. When signing in for attendance at the WU CME accredited activity, it is important to make sure to use your WUSTL email address (or the email address linked to your WU CME account) in order for credits to be applied correctly to your CME account and be reported to ABS. Please check your spelling.

Q. My transcript is missing dates of sessions that I attended. Who should I contact?

A. Confirm on the list in the bullet below the RSS/Round in question is one we are currently submitting data to the ABS. If the conference is on that list, contact the coordinator of the activity, give the dates in question, and ask for your attendance to be reviewed. If no record of your attendance can be found, verification from the rounds Chairperson will be needed before those dates can be added to your record. It is very important to make sure you are checking in at each session you attend with your correct email address.

Q. I attend another WU conferences/rounds or course that is not on the list. How can I get my credit reported from those sessions?

A. As of now, CME will only be able to report credits earned from the following conferences/rounds:
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident Conference-BCT01 – Monday 7:00 am
  • Breast Tumor Conference - BGS01 – Thursday 4:00 pm

  • Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Conference VA St. Louis Health Care System- VIM04 – 2nd and 4th Monday
Additional conferences may be added in the future.

Q. Will I be able to get MOC2/Self-Assessment credit at conferences/rounds?

A. No. MOC2/self-assessment credit is not available at conferences/rounds at the present time.

Q. How will I know if the educational activity I am attending will be submitted to the ABS?

A. Conferences/courses that are being reported will contain the following statement on the session announcement along with the QR code for checking in. Successful completion of this CME activity enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.

Q. How do I verify if I have given permission to WU CME to report my credit?

A. Log into the CME website using your WUSTL Key.

Q. When will I see my credits on by ABS Profile?

A. WU CME will begin reporting credit each quarter beginning in October for first quarter of the fiscal year (July, August, and September). It may take a week for the credit to be transferred from ACCME to your ABS profile.
