Objectives: The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge/competence, and upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Clarify the scope of the problem of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) aka neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
  • Evaluate non-pharmacologic treatment in the care of the mother-infant dyad.
  • Analyze the benefits of a functional assessment tool in the management of an infant with NOWS.
  • Identify the difference in neonatal outcomes for infants managed with Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) vs those managed with the Finnegan scoring tool.
  • Evaluate when discharge follow up is necessary for the prenatally opioid exposed infant.

Target Audience: This course is designed for obstetrics and gynecologist, family and emergency physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other allied health professionals who encounter geriatric patients in a health care setting.
